Hello there! let's play a game.... raise your hand if you like to-do lists. Hand up if you rock to do lists eeeerryday! high five! Hands in the ayyyyyer if you experience an immediate nap response in your body that sends you into a bear like hibernation to avoid all things list oriented, or suddenly social media and Pinterest take over your life. Or does everything in your house become shiny and you transform into a bird, pecking at anything but what you have set out to do today? Now raise your hand if your to do lists seem to haunt you, like follow you around and make you feel like a failure for not getting a chance to check everything off with your cool new bright colored pen that you bought to motivate you to be on top of your to-do lists.
Today I suddenly felt very sleepy as I was sitting down to get stuff done. And then I thought to myself no matter how long I procrastinate, this is a non-negotiable that needs to be done. My next thought was how much energy am I wasting putting this off? A light bulb went off, something I keep coming back to. A sweet friend of mine taught me a trick for being productive, SET A TIMER. Commit to small bursts of focus on one task. It could be 5 minutes or an hour, that part doesn't matter, it's about breaking it down into bite size portions until it's done. So I set a timer, turned on some music and got to cleaning my house, paying bills, and writing this. The truth is that I feel better once I get things done, my energy and mental space is freed up and I get to use my cool new pen and check it off the list. It is a beautiful act of self care to tie up loose ends and nurture your energy and space.
I hope your week is off to a lovely start.
